There have been a rash of Facebook and Twitter shares regarding a Yale study which “proves” that giving heavy flu shot doses to cancer patients helps prevent infection. The study’s supposed aim was to figure out a way to help cancer patients who are more succeptible to viral infection. The end result, of course, is more flu shot dosage. Because how could a study about flu shots end any other way? The flu shot given in the study is called Fluzone, and ultra-heavy dose of flu shot. This shot was followed by a second high dose 30 days later.
The novel dosing strategy led to patients being 4% likely to get a flu infection compared to an expected rate of 20%.
The 51-patient study had no control group, but “given these encouraging results,” the team said it is planning a randomized, controlled trial for the 2015-2016 flu season comparing the method with standard of care.
Without a control group, the study has no benchmark to base any of their findings from. This study is actually just conjecture at this point.
And here is really the bigger point.
Fluzone was the third-best selling vaccine last year with $1.72 billion in sales behind Pfizer’s ($PFE) Prevnar and Merck’s ($MRK) Gardasil. According to a recent analysis, it’s expected to grow in annual sales to $2.03 billion in 2020.
Profit. This is really just a glorified ad for Fluzone. With over $2 billion in sales on the line, it is not difficult to imagine the incentive to get as many shoddy supportive studies up as possible. Being able to tout your vaccine and the term, “cancer,” in the same headline, goes a tremendously long ways in enticement and appeal to the public. Creating a study without a control group is a lazy and self-serving endeavor.
If we want to help cancer patients, maybe we could start with detoxifying them? In this study, the suggestion is to add more toxic chemicals to their experience. If you had cancer, would you think it safe to put the following chemicals in your body? This list is derived directly from the CDC.
Common substances found in vaccines include:
Aluminum gels or salts of aluminum which are added as adjuvants to help the vaccine stimulate a better response.
Adjuvants help promote an earlier, more potent response, and more persistent immune response to the vaccine.Antibiotics which are added to some vaccines to prevent the growth of germs (bacteria) during production and storage of the vaccine. No vaccine produced in the United States contains penicillin.
Egg protein is found in influenza and yellow fever vaccines, which are prepared using chicken eggs. Ordinarily, persons who are able to eat eggs or egg products safely can receive these vaccines.
Formaldehyde is used to inactivate bacterial products for toxoid vaccines, (these are vaccines that use an inactive bacterial toxin to produce immunity.) It is also used to kill unwanted viruses and bacteria that might contaminate the vaccine during production. Most formaldehyde is removed from the vaccine before it is packaged.
Monosodium glutamate (MSG) and 2-phenoxy-ethanol which are used as stabilizers in a few vaccines to help the vaccine remain unchanged when the vaccine is exposed to heat, light, acidity, or humidity.
Thimerosal is a mercury-containing preservative that is added to vials of vaccine that contain more than one dose to prevent contamination and growth of potentially harmful bacteria.
You really have to consider the bigger picture when it comes to these studies which are often touted and passed around as the bible.
